Obesity is now the UK's biggest killer! Are you looking to drastically change your lifestyle around? Here at Mark Regan Fitness I can help you to lose weight and most importantly, keep it off for life!
Your health is in extreme danger if you have been diagnosed with obesity! Obesity is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a disease in its own right. It can be defined as "the excessive storage of body fat, resulting in a significant impariment of health" (Wallace 1997).
This is an easy one to answer. Basically people are eating too much (too many calories) and not burning off enough energy. As long as a person continues to eat more calories than they are using up, they will gain weight indefinately.
In today's society, we have many labour saving devices which our forefathers did not. This is partly to blame, along with sedentary lifestyles, jobs which are physically undemanding (how many calories do you think sitting in an office chair for 8 hours a day is gonna burn when you compare it to the likes of a builder on a construciton site who is on the move all day?) and conveniance foods which save us time but are no good for us in the long run.
What saddens me also is that children are now also susceptible to this. Videogames and junk food are now common among children. Also the school curriculum is now a joke and kids do not get the Physical Activity they deserve (in today's PE lessons, kids aren't expected to physically take part in a game as long as they can take on the role of an official and understand the rules of sport. Physical participation is not even a priority any more).
You're far more likely to lose weight with my help than if you go it alone. Not only that, but the training programmes will not be a haphazard guess for losing weight. It will be fully structured around you and your current fitness levels.
For instance, many people trying to lose weight begin by going straight into aerobic exercise e.g. jogging but I would not recommend this. The reason is that the knee and ankle joints are not yet accustomed to the impact forces which will be placed upon them. Therefore the first training phase should be with the aim of improving functional strength in the legs and hips. This way there is less risk of injury.
Also don't worry about boredom. I never keep every training programme the same for long. I offer a variety of activities and training methods to keep workouts fun and challenging.
Exercises and training programmes will vary from person to person. However, in the early stages I would highly recommend some form of dietary intervention to achieve weight loss.
Balance and stability are key areas for obese clients as studies have shown that obese individuals are at a greater risk of falls the non-obese individuals.
