Injuries and Conditions

Sports Massage is useful for treating a wide range of symptoms including whiplash, thoracic and lower back pain, sciatica and many more.

Injuries and Conditions affecting the Spine

Sports Massage Spine

There are many spinal related injuries and conditions which are often presented to sports massage therapists. If you suspect you may have a spinal injury such as disc herniation (slipped disc) or whiplash from a severe force such as a car accident then I strongly recommend that you see your GP first before booking any sports massage therapy sessions.

Whiplash

Whiplash is generally caused by excessive flexion or extension of the cervical spine following a rapidly applied force. A common example in today's society would be road traffic collisions.

Whiplash Sports Massage

When the cervical region of the spine (the neck area) has been flexed or extended very quickly and forcefully the muscles around this area are put under extreme tension and thus likely to strain and rupture. The damage to the musculature can take months to heal in most cases and if not treated will leave behind scar tissue on the muscles and leave the patient with a limited range of motion.

Sports Massage benefites whiplash patients by improving blood flow to the neck area, realigning muscle fibres and reducing the severity of the scar tissue formation and breaking up muscular adhesions which cause the muscles to become tight and pinch on the nerves which pass through them.

If you received a neck injury during a road traffic collision then you may be able to recover the costs of your sports massage treatment through your insurance company or a third party's insurance. All whiplash injuries must be referred to a GP first for the GP to clear for further assessment and treatment.

Cervicalgia

Cervicalgia is a condition not associated with nerve damage or impingement. It occurs when the soft tissues, particularly the muscles, are tight and become adaptively shortened. As the muscles in the neck are constantly working to maintain head posture they become tight very easily, leaving them prone to tearing if sudden movements are performed.

Symptoms of Cervicalgia:

As cervicalgia is a condition relating to the soft tissues of the neck it makes sports massage one of the best treatments to cure the condition. Sports massage will release the tension in the muscles thereby reducing the risk of injury. Furthermore, by choosing to have a sports massage from Mark Regan you will be provided with post care treatment and simple exercises to prevent the condition reoccurring in the future.

Thoracic Pain

Pain is usually local to the affected vertebrae and is often caused by compensatory action (for instance the spine compensating for the hamstrings) and incorrect lifting from a flexed position.

Symptoms of Thoracic pain:

As the muscles around the thoracic area are postural muscles they are prone to tightness. Sports massage will help relieve the tension in this area by providing blood and nutrients to the affected area and breaking up adhesions or trigger points in the area if present. In your post care advice you will be given stretches to perform on your own as well as learning correct lifting patterns all of which will help prevent the condition from reoccurring.

Lower back pain

Lower back pain (LBP) is pain which is localised to the lower back and usually caused by rotation and incorrect lifting from a flexed position. Lower back pain can also be referred to as lumbago.

Symptoms of Lower back pain:

Although a patient may be feeling pain in their lower back it may be the case that the gluteals or hamstrings are excessively tight and are pulling the pelvis out of alignment which sets off a chain reaction up the body. It is important that anyone with Lower back pain is assessed first to find out the cause of the pain so that it can be treated effectively. By choosing Mark Regan as your sports massage therapist you will be fully assessed before any treatment and be given post care advice to aid you on the road to recovery and no more lower back pain.

Thoracic outlet syndrome

Thoracic outlet syndrome is the compression of the brachial plexus, certain nerve roots and the subclavian artery and vein. The brachial plexus contains the nerves supplying the shoulder girdle, arm and hand and the subclavian artery and vein pass under the clavicle to transport blood to and from the arm, hand, neck, shoulder and head. Causes can include extrinsic injury to the shoulder, swelling, posture or a congenital condition.
